Helen JR Bruce is an author, folklorist and oral storyteller. When not putting together editions of Witch Magazine she can be found working on her folkloric fantasy novels, storytelling at festivals and giving talks on folklore for societies and groups.
Her favourite activities are walking in nature, appreciating good moss and drinking hot beverages. If she had to describe herself as a certain type of Witch, it would be a folkloric witch or a nature witch. After writing for Witch Magazine for a number of years, she was delighted to join the magazine as Editor in November 2023. She is passionate about offering a safe and supportive space for emerging artists and writers, and for the lesser heard and under-represented voices within witchcraft.
She trained in shamanic healing for two years at the Brigit Healing Centre in Glastonbury and has just completed studies in Creative Writing at Bath Spa University and been awarded the title Master of Arts. In her writing, she loves to blend the mythic and the everyday, challenging the idea that the spiritual and mundane are separate. Working alongside the Sacred Earth Activism movement, she is sharing her ideas around storyscape and sacred geography, identifying an active mythic system as one of the core signifiers of sacred landscape.
Currently, she is committed to a year of pilgrimage with the Girt Dog of Langport, which involves walking once a week for 52 weeks on part of the outline of this 5 mile long dog shaped land glyph! Her special folkloric interests are Black Dog folklore and the Wild Hunt and she is dedicated to working with Gwyn ap Nudd, Arawn and other manifestations of the Master of the Hunt. She runs Solstice Storytelling Circle with her friend Oak and she lives close to the magical Somerset levels with her two pet sheep and beautiful children.
